Something Cool

Let’s talk ice!  (This post is a great excuse to share a classic track from June Christy.)  We have been on a quest for the ideal square ice cube for quite some time.  Short of spending a small fortune on a commercial ice maker, it can be quite a chore to produce good ice at home.  Most hard plastic or metal trays do not produce a square cube and can absorb freezer odors.  Store bought cubes tend to melt quickly and we truly don’t know the source of water for these.

Perfect large square cubes are even more of a chore and can be downright pricey!  Making one cube at a time at home might be a great choice for some, but it’s simply not practical for on the go folks like us!

Over the last several years, we have seen the rise of silicone ice cube molds. When we first tried them, we discovered that they too absorb freezer odors. We have tried repeatedly to prevent this from occurring, to no avail.  We even had to have our fridge replaced and had a fresh new freezer, but still found an odd taste dissolving into our favorite cocktails.  Not cool!  (he he)  Our solution has been to use the silicone molds, but to place them in a glass container while they are freezing.  Yes, it’s time consuming, but well worth it when you are sipping an exceptional whiskey.  We use the brand that we have seen blow up all over, Tovolo.    They have a great selection of sizes and focus on the square cube.  Our personal favorite.  Remember, the key is to keep it in a closed container and to thoroughly rinse it between each use.

Summer is around the corner and ice will be the key!  If you have any tips to share, please let us know.   In the meantime, keep it cool!
